About Mari Lynch

Summer skies of my birthplace.
My background

When I was born, my parents farmed along Salt Creek, a few miles from the town of Chestnut, Illinois—population 450.  Later we moved to the nearby town of Mt. Pulaski, population 1700 (about the size of Monterey High School).  That remained my home until age 17, when I left for college.

I moved to Santa Cruz in 1976, then to rural Monterey County in 1981, which remains my home.

Mount Toro, to the east of me,

is sometimes dusted in short-lived winter snow.

Our winters are lush and green in Monterey County.

My career

My professional focus is words and ideas.  I am the owner of Fine Wordworking, a writing and editing services business established in Monterey in 1981.  In my professional work, especially in book editing, it’s necessary to adhere to meticulous guidelines.  With this personal blog/community service site, such guidelines will often be cast to the wind!

About the Bicycling Monterey site design

The wizardry of geeks and the artistry of graphic designers amaze me.  While I admire those talents, they are not my areas of expertise.

“I was as skittish with a fish back then as I often am today with new tech.  Excited to take hold of it, but smart enough to look around for help!”

Low tech by choice (see “Lead Pencil Girl Gone Techno”), I never planned to serve as a webmaster,  just wandered into the blogging world in May 2009.  Little did I know then how many hours at the computer—away from the bikeways—were ahead!

What did I discover?  That the process of writing is more cumbersome in WordPress than writing in some other programs (or writing on a pad of paper while swinging in a hammock).  And that having a good sense for site design—including aesthetics, navigability, and more—means you may make a valuable contribution to a team effort . . . and, for most of us, it does not mean you can personally make that vision in your head appear on a screen!

Though I’d like perfection here (that’s the editor in me), I decided early on that a personal blog only needs to be “good enough.”  Because too many hours sitting with a computer just aren’t healthy.  I’d rather be biking!

See you soon, back on the bikeways…
