Carmel Confusion, Part II: Rights of people who bike

Short link to this post: http://bit.ly/CarmelConfusion2

Above: Among those who ride a bicycle in Carmel-by-the-Sea is this officer, one of Monterey County’s constables of the peace who bike.

[This post was originally published on March 16, 2018, updated April 3 and April 6. 4/3/18 update: Mad Dogs & Englishmen was unanimously approved by Carmel City Council on 4/3/18 to rent bicycles in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Details: http://ci.carmel.ca.us/carmel/index.cfm/government/agendas-and-minutes-archive/ 4/6/18 update: Follow-up story by Mary Schley, “Council overrules commission, OKs bike rentals,” in the April 6-12, 2018 Carmel Pine Cone. The story quoted City Council Member Carrie Theis, reporting “she looks forward ‘to seeing more bikes on Scenic rather than cars.’” Bicycling Monterey agrees, we look forward to that too—and bet the Carmel police officers on bicycles, pictured below, probably do as well. Bicycling Monterey reminds people who bike: Know bike laws. Start with Be Cool, Be Safe – bike law summary. For more info, see Bicycling Monterey’s Riding skills, safety tips, and CA bike laws section, which includes some local bike-related ordinances for various Monterey County communities. It makes sense people are confused about bicycles on sidewalks in Carmel and elsewhere, since local ordinances regarding sidewalk riding vary around the county and state. Below the original (March 16-22, 2018 Pine Cone story, read on to learn about bike-friendliness in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Carmel City Council has bike-savvy members, e.g., Bobby Richards and Carrie Theis. They and others may want to share information with Carmel planning commissioners about the multiple benefits of biking to the environment, economy, and more (http://bit.ly/WhyBike).

Meet some of the many people who bike Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Below: This Carmel resident sometimes prefers to bike dressed casually, and on other occasions, to bike elegant.

Although she’d set aside her helmet for the photo, when it comes to pedaling, Rosaleen Trambley is a devotee of donning a helmet. Legally required for people under 18 in California, many adults wear them too, including Rosaleen. “Helmet hair? Who cares! I can fluff up my hair on arrival. No big deal!”

Below: Jay Dolata is co-owner of a Carmel-by-the-Sea business, Carmel Belle, a HER Helmet Thursdays charter participant since 2009.
Among the hundreds of businesses and organizations in 19 Monterey County communities offering discounts to people who bike are many in Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Carmel Belle was featured in a KSBW Top Video of the Day, a Project Economy story in January 2010 about Bicycling Monterey’s HER Helmet Thursdays Project.
The first HER Helmet Thursdays participating businesses and organizations in Carmel-by-the-Sea are:

400° Gourmet Burgers & Fries, Cantinetta Luca, Carmel Bach Festival, Carmel Belle, Carmel Coffee, Cypress Inn, De Tierra Vineyards Tasting Room, Eco Carmel, El Pescadero (formerly Mundaka), Forest Lodge, Forge in the Forest, Grasing’s, Hofsas House Hotel, laBalena, Lamplighter Inn, Merlot Bistro, PortaBella, Scheid Vineyards Tasting Room, Terry’s at the Cypress Inn.

Below: A Carmel-by-the-Sea visitor pauses across the street from HER Helmet Thursdays charter participants, since 2009, the Cypress Inn and Terry’s Lounge. The Cypress Inn is co-owned by Dennis LeVett and actress and animal rights advocate Doris Day.

As of 2018, for twenty years, Australian visitor Carey Beebe bikes to Bach venues throughout Monterey County. Below, he’s pictured at HER Helmet Thursdays participant Carmel Bach Festival’s Sunset Center location. Photo courtesy of Carey Beebe.

Below: A Carmel-by-the-Sea family was out early one morning, the mother teaching her children about growing up bikewise.

When schedule or stamina don’t allow biking all the way to a destination, bike-and-ride, as these Carmel-by-the-Sea police officers do.

The photos directly above and below were provided courtesy of Carmel Police Department.

Above: This person had taken a break from their night ride in Carmel-by-the-Sea, 9 Dec 2017, perhaps to do some shopping.

And Bicycling Monterey’s founder bikes Carmel-by-the-Sea too; that’s my bicycle below.
