Bike BLM / Ft Ord? Watch out for big trucks!

Now through Dec 2012, heads up!  If you bike BLM / Fort Ord Public Lands, it’s a good time to refresh your safety skills on this subject. Why?  Because of the notice below from Melissa Broadston.
  1. “Bicycle Safety Information for Commercial Drivers”
  2. Bike safety info for commercial drivers, in Spanish – “INFORMACIÓN SOBRE LA SEGURIDAD DE LOS CICLISTAS
PARA LOS CONDUCTORES DE VEHÍCULOS COMERCIALES”
  3. Safety around trucks, for bicyclists, English – “Sharing the Road Safely with Trucks and Buses”
  4. Safety around trucks, for bicyclists, Spanish – “compartiendo las calles de manera segura con camiones y autobuses” ecoact.org/PDF/bike_safet

Traffic Alert:  Digging and Hauling Soil on Fort Ord

Riding or walking on the paved roads near Fort Ord’s Parker Flats area and see truck traffic?

The Army is digging up soil in the Impact Area and trucking it to the Fort Ord landfill. The Army will be hauling soils on certain sections of Barloy Canyon, Parker Flats Road, and Eucalyptus Road weekdays from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Please be very aware of this truck traffic which will continue through December 2012.

Special Attention for Cyclists: If you ride your bicycle in the vicinity of the Bureau of Land Management Headquarters, please download and review the map of the hauling route.

For Spanish speakers

As included on Bicycling Monterey”s Spanish (and other language) resources page, those brochures are available in Spanish too:

The helpful brochures above are highlighted in Bicycling Monterey’s CA Bike Laws and Personal Safety section and were prepared by our neighbors in Santa Cruz.

Speaking of safety…

Here’s a shout-out to Monterey County Waste Management for an excellent safety record.  On May 18, 2012, they had a big bbq for their drivers to celebrate year-to-date accident-free.  That’s 28,000+ work hours without an accident.

When you think about how those big trucks are hauling all garbage, recycling, yard waste, and compost from the varied neighborhoods all over the county–with pedestrians, bicyclists, vehicle drivers, and pets all dashing between them on their routes–that’s an impressive record.  Tip o’ the helmet to MCWM!

From now through December 2011, when biking near the BLM headquarters, be especially on the lookout for trucks!  Read on for details.

It’s easy to get distracted by the beautiful views on Fort Ord Public Lands.

If you ride your bicycle in the vicinity of the Bureau of Land Management Headquarters, be aware that an Army project is underway, to haul/truck soils from the Impact Area to the landfill.

The Army will be hauling soils on certain sections of Barloy Canyon, Parker Flats Road, and Eucalyptus Road weekdays from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00p.m.

Please exercise extra caution and be very alert to this truck traffic, which is ongoing and will continue through December 2011.

Some residents of upper Seaside and Ord Military Community (Fitch and Marshall Parks) as well as students and faculty at California State University Monterey Bay may see continued Fort Ord truck traffic over the next few months.
