Oct 15, 2017: 5th Ciclovía Salinas — Open Streets in Monterey County

¡Donde las calles son suyas! – Where the streets are yours!

Gratis – Free

For all ages and abilities.

Ciclovía Salinas, still the only Monterey County Open Streets, is Sunday, October 15, 2017, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine. [Update: Shine it did, and Salinas temperatures soared to 86 degrees.]
Below, get familiar with the local Open Streets etiquette, provided in English y en español. Also below:  an audio intro, plus tips for making the most of this day in the Monterey County seat.
A youth-led initiative, Ciclovía Salinas remains an annual event. Spread the word—including to people not online—so visitors and locals alike won’t miss this once-a-year opportunity.

People of all ages and abilities enjoy a stretch of public streets free of motor vehicle traffic. Ciclovía Salinas temporarily closes a 1.5-mile section of Alisal Street in a route that connects downtown/Oldtown and East Salinas / The Alisal, bridging culturally rich neighborhoods. (Scroll down for neighborhood tips and an audio intro.)

Enjoy walking, biking, rolling in a wheelchair, skateboarding, rollerblading, running, jogging, or engaging in other people-powered transportation and physically active play on car-free streets. Art, music, zumba, dance, and other activities along the route—as well as public health and other information booths—add to the mix of this lively event.

For 2017, booths will be positioned in the middle of Alisal Street. This better highlights the local businesses on Alisal and reduces speed of bike traffic. Remember, bike polite.

The etiquette includes guidelines for all participants, plus special tips for people who bike, skateboard, and more. As noted in the etiquette, service dogs (e.g., for the blind) are welcome at Ciclovía Salinas; please leave other dogs at home or kenneled.
