Volunteers from the bicycle repair and safety class were among those honored at the Monterey County Probation Department Youth Center’s 11th Annual Appreciation Day on April 30, 2014 [and at the Annual Appreciation Day in 2015, 2016, 2017].

Thirty providers were recognized. See full list below.

This annual event is in recognition that “Each year community members and collaboratives enter the facility to offer support, motivation, and guidance to our youth….We appreciate all that you do. ‘It takes a village to raise a child.'”

The highlights of the 2014 Appreciation Day were two presentations by youth. The first was a talk and an a cappella vocal performance by a Youth Center resident and bike class student. The second presentation was a talk by a Youth Center aftercare resident.

Introductory remarks were made by Youth Center Director Richard Gray. A keynote talk was given by Retired Superior Court Judge John M. Phillips, founder of Rancho Cielo.

Mark Banks performed songs including John Mayer’s “Waiting on the World to Change” and Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”

Certificates of appreciation for providers came from California Senator Anthony Cannella, California Assembly Member Luis A. Alejo, Monterey County Supervisor Louis R. Calcagno, and Monterey County Probation Department Division Director Richard Gray and Probation Services Manager Joe Grammatico. Numerous local dignitaries were in attendance.

Certificates were presented by Probation Services Manager Joe Grammatico and Deputy Probation Officer Ana Argueta.

Following a video presentation with scenes from Youth Center activities, lunch was served.

The 11th Annual Appreciation Day Committee members were Ana Argueta, Novie Ayson-Blea, Maggie Contreras, Sandra Degnan, Janet Garibay, Patty Esparza, Richard Gray, Joe Grammatico, Anna Jimenez, Jeff Johnson, Desiree Saldana, and Mary Unruh-Tipton.
