Team Bike Monterey County: Stickers, Poster for Bike Month 2017

Since 1995, as evidenced by my family’s t-shirt below, Transportation Agency for Monterey County has been celebrating bicycling nearly every May.
Back then it was Bike Day. Later it became Bike Week. And, after taking a year off in 2013, TAMC picked up the celebrating anew in 2014 with even more gusto, making it Bike Month.
Keeping it fresh year after year calls on the creativity of TAMC’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities Advisory Committee AKA Bike-Ped Committee—check out who’s serving, and where more representation is needed. Couple that with the creativity and support of TAMC staff, and it’s fun to see what they come up with.
For 2017 the bilingual (Spanish-English) Bike Month poster from TAMC and new corresponding stickers, pictured above, highlight 19 places people bike. And #20? They tip the helmet to Cinco de Mayo too.

Check out TAMC’s 20 teams below.

The twenty are referred to as “Team….” Why? Likely because we’re all part of the team of people who bike in Monterey County. (Makes me think of a slogan that one of Monterey County’s local bike shops, Seaside’s Sports Center Bicycles, has used: “Home of Team Everybody.”)

And TAMC even included our Monterey Bay region neighbors too (“Team Monterey Bay”).

Following each of their team names below is an example of info in that vein, all from the Bicycling Monterey website, 2009-2017.
Some examples are current or timeless, while others are “throwbacks,” some Monterey County bicycling history. I tried to restrain myself and just give one example for each. For more examples, type that name in Bicycling Monterey’s search window and see what you may discover.

Contact TAMC for stickers, or you may be able to pick them up at Bike Month events. Click here for TAMC’s Bike Month 2017 page, where you can also download Bike Month 2017 posters, in Spanish and English. Hey, what about more representation for South County, beyond the Mission and Salinas Valley stickers? More South County communities not being represented in TAMC’s Bike Month 2017 stickers is a reminder of the need for South County (and other) representation on the Bike-Ped Committee; click here for who’s serving on the committee, and to see where more representation is needed.
Meanwhile, check out the first HER Helmet Thursdays spots; South County communities are repped in that project. HER Helmet Thursdays spots are in 19 Monterey County cities and unincorporated communities/census-designated places, including Big Sur, Carmel and Carmel Valley, Castroville, Corral de Tierra, Gonzales, Greenfield, King City, Marina, Monterey, Moss Landing, Pacific Grove, Pajaro, Prunedale, Salinas, San Ardo, Sand City, Seaside, and Soledad.
