See them in action: Monterey Police Department Bicycle Patrol

On New Year’s Day 2012, Officer Kaster of the City of Monterey Police Department was on patrol, including on the Cannery Row section of the multiuse trail.  His presence and availability helped increase the safety of wheelchair-users, walkers, bikers, skaters, skateboarders, and other people of all ages who share the trail.   At such times, the work of cops on bikes may mistakenly appear to be somewhat of a lark.

Yet on the very same work shift, an officer’s duties often include life or death situations.  Below, on the evening of NYD 2012, Officer Kaster is querying doormen at the Portola Hotel, working to locate an individual with critical health problems who needed vital medication.

No matter what the job entails, these officers are equally at the ready as their counterparts in patrol cars.  It’s all in a day’s work for our cops on bikes!

Have you seen the Constables of the Peace on bicycles all over Monterey County?

The City of Monterey Community Action Team’s Bicycle Patrol Unit–including Officer Kaster above–watches for distracted travelers and others needing their attention.  See them in action!

Special thanks to the City of Monterey for creating this video of our beloved bike patrol officers!
